The A. Fiumera lab characterizes the genetic basis to natural variation in ecologically important traits. We are interested in understanding interactions between different genes and how these genes interact with the environment to affect phenotypic variation. Using model systems such as Drosophila melanogaster, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and Daphnia magna, we aim to understand how organisms respond to environmental stressors and identify the genes involved in these responses. We am particularly interested in the co-evolutionary processes between males and females, mitochondrial and nuclear genomes, and the role of sex-biased genetic effects. Our research will help elucidate the mechanisms affecting evolutionary processes and understand how genetic and environmental interactions affect complex diseases.
